Fog, Foliage, and Grandeur: A Timeless Autumn at the Mt. Washington Hotel
A Scene Straight Out of a Painting
A couple of years ago, I found myself standing before the majestic Mt. Washington Hotel, camera in hand, as nature staged one of its most breathtaking performances. Fog hung delicately below the peak of Mount Washington, creating a soft veil that added mystery to the mountain’s rugged silhouette. The trees were just beginning to shift into their autumn attire—splashes of gold, amber, and crimson hinting at the season’s arrival.
The winding drive leading to the hotel was alive with golfers enjoying the crisp air, their figures adding a sense of scale and serenity to the scene. It was the kind of moment that feels suspended in time, where the grandeur of nature and the elegance of architecture meet in perfect harmony.
A Historic Gem in the White Mountains
Built between 1900 and 1902 by coal magnate Joseph Stickney, the Mt. Washington Hotel was designed to be a luxurious escape for city dwellers. Stickney spared no expense, bringing in 250 Italian artisans to craft the granite and stucco masonry. The hotel opened on July 28, 1902, boasting over 2,000 doors, 12,000 windows, and more than eleven miles of plumbing.
Today, the hotel is part of the Omni Mount Washington Resort and features 269 guest rooms, including those in the newer Presidential Wing. It’s one of the last surviving grand hotels in the White Mountains and was the site of the historic Bretton Woods Conference in 1944, where delegates from 44 nations established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
