Where the Water Falls and Memories Flow: Our Family’s Love for Tahquamenon

A Place Etched in Our Hearts

Tahquamenon Falls isn’t just a destination—it’s a part of our family’s story. Nestled in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, this breathtaking natural wonder has welcomed us more times than we can count. From spontaneous day trips to planned vacations, it’s always been a place of peace, adventure, and togetherness.

Childhood Wonder by the River

I still remember the sparkle in my kids’ eyes as they searched the riverbed for coins dropped by other visitors. It was a simple joy, yet it captured the magic of childhood exploration. They’d inch closer to the rushing water, daring each other to walk behind the falls, giggling as the mist soaked their clothes and the roar of the water echoed around them.

A Photographer’s Retreat

Most recently, I found myself hiking out with my camera, drawn once again to the Upper Falls. I stood on the upper path, looking almost straight on to the cascade, just before the fall colors reached their peak. The scene was timeless—water tumbling over the edge, framed by trees just beginning to blush with autumn. Capturing that moment felt like preserving a piece of our family’s soul.

The Upper Falls: Nature’s Masterpiece

The Upper Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, stretching 200 feet wide and dropping nearly 50 feet. The tannin-rich water gives it a unique amber hue, especially striking in the golden light of fall. It’s a place that commands awe, whether you’re seeing it for the first time or the fiftieth.

Close to Home, Close to Heart

With my wife’s family living just south of the falls, it was always an easy drive—one we made often. That proximity turned Tahquamenon into more than a scenic spot; it became a tradition, a sanctuary, and a place where our family grew closer with every visit.

Forever a Part of Us

Tahquamenon Falls has witnessed our laughter, our quiet moments, and our shared adventures. It’s where our kids grew up splashing in the mist, where I found inspiration behind the lens, and where we’ve returned time and again to reconnect with nature and each other. It’s not just a place we’ve visited—it’s a place that lives in us.
